Bourbon Fish Artworks is a blend of art, nature and perhaps a touch of storytelling through the intricate structures of fish bones. It's a result of my passion for aquatic life that has evolved into a distinctive art form. Each piece captures a blend of elegance and the natural beauty of the underwater world.
My artwork consists of metal plated fish bones, from both fresh water and salt water habitats, with a polished or patina finish. They are made from real fish skeletons (ethically sourced) that have been fully stripped and cleaned using dermestid beetles, reassembled by hand and coated with several layers of liquid metal (usually tin or copper). The typical piece will take 20-100 hours to complete, depending on the size and delicate nature of the fish. The longest portion is during the assembly phase. It’s much like a jigsaw puzzle in that the skeleton has to be completely reassembled by hand, one bone at a time. It is a very similar process that museums and taxidermists use to produce animal skeletons for display. The metal application is 3-4 layers with the final layer including the patina acid. Once the “metalization” process is finalized a clear coat sealer is applied in order to preserve the appearance. Each artwork is completed with a custom mount or shadow box that best fits the unique piece.
Every piece of artwork is one-of-a kind and deeply personal. The uniqueness of each piece means that it carries its own identity and charm, something that can't be replicated.
The choice of whether to display in the open or a shadowbox enhances the storytelling aspect, shaping how viewers experience and connect with the artwork.
It's very rewarding to tailor each piece to it's ideal presentation, knowing that every creation finds its own perfect way to shine. It's like giving each fish skeleton its own moment of individual expression and beauty.
There are several options when it comes to the final finish of the art piece. The most popular choices are copper or tin metals.
They can be polished to produce a shiny appearance or layered with an acid patina finish for a more aged appearance.
The most popular patina finishes are green with the copper metal or rust with the tin metal.
Every piece is completed with a spray sealer to protect the beauty of the finish.
My artwork not only preserves the beauty of the fish but also immortalizes the experience and memories of catching them. Each piece becomes so much more meaningful when it's tied to a specific moment on the water. It's like capturing a snapshot of time, but in a medium that's deeply tied to nature.
Over 90% of my fish come from the Gulf Coast around Galveston Island. It's another way of telling a story of the local waters and their vibrant ecosystems. This technique of art allows for great memories on the water to be captured in a beautiful display forever!
